Where are they now?
by Wyn Drabble
When I was writing about the local food scene some years ago, the names of a number of people kept coming up. You may have wondered – as did I – what some of them have been doing since.
Joss Lamers and Kees Peters
You may remember that Joss and Kees carried on Vicki Bruhns-Boldersons’s good work at Bayswater Restaurant after Vicky’s departure. Joss in the kitchen and Kees looking after front-of-house. They sold it in 1997 after seven years there.
The next few years saw them catering lunches at Crab Farm Winery and, at the same time, running the successful Cornucopia Lodge in Eskdale. In 2000 they started Vintners in Clive, where they helped to promote wineries that did not have cellar door facilities.
A soup business called Hearty was their next venture. Located in Featherston Street, Wellington, it found plenty of business from office workers and Kirkcaldie & Stains customers.
Eighteen months later it was back to Hawke’s Bay and a year back at Crab Farm before starting ZiggZagg Cafe at the bottom end of lower Emerson Street, Napier. In 2008 they sold this to an ex-employee.
Working at Restaurant Indonesia started in 2008 and was mixed with some world travel before they finally bought the business themselves in 2010, just after setting up a similar venture in Spain. One of their aims was to bring the prices down and, judging from the glowing comments on their web page visitors’ book, they have found a successful formula.
Says Kees: “We were attracted to Restaurant Indonesia by it’s long history (almost 30 years), the uniqueness of its cuisine and, in particular, the famous meal ‘Rijsttafel’ and, for sure, the Dutch-Indonesian connection.”
The pair say they are overwhelmed by the loyal support people have shown through their different ventures. Even today, at the new venture, diners reminisce about Bayswater.
“It is amazing,” says Kees, “how many people refer to it and what they can remember of it – where they sat, what meals they had, what I was wearing.”
Obviously he still enjoys his work. He admits he can’t help himself: “I just love looking after people.!
