Reviewed 8th February 2012 – Went there for my birthday Tuesday night. Got there a bit early and Kees was very welcoming even though he hadn’t even had time to turn the lights on. We had a fabulous night at my favorite restaraunt. The food was “Deliciousimo” and that is an understatement. We love this restaraunt and recommend it to everyone. Thanks again for a wonderful night.

Reviewed 18th January 2012 – I’ve been coming here when visiting Napier for many years. The latest owners have carried on the great food and service. Throughly recommend the supreme RIJSTTAFEL, such a journey through many taste sensations. The service is great and friendly. The wine list has many local wines and at very reasonable prices. but ultimately it’s the food that draws us back, even the kids got into it! Make sure you book to guarantee a table.

Reviewed  27th November 2011 – My partner and I were wandering past Restaurant Indonesia while we were visiting Napier this weekend. As we walked past we smelt the most amazing smells coming from this restaurant. We were looking for somewhere special to spend my birthday meal and decided we would give the fancy pants winery places a miss and book into this place the following day. We were SO pleased we did! From the moment you enter the place you feel welcome and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. We are both foodie people and can be quite critical at times as we are cooks ourselves. This met all our expectations. I only went in to have a nasi goreng but was very pleased I changed my mind to the Rijsttafel which is a selection of small plates of Indonesian food. It was an experience I will not forget. We will definitely travel back down from Auckland to have it again – it was that good!
What was good about it? The food, the atmosphere, the waiter and the host of the place who didn’t rush us and gave us good advice such as to take our time when we ate and to not rush to leave once we had finished and to take as long as we wanted to enjoy ourselves at our table.
All I can say is well done – I don’t write reviews but I am very pleased to write this one. Well done to everyone involved in this little gem!!! Leanne & Paul

The meal and service were brilliant – well recommended!

Review 27th September 2011 –   An extremely tasty food sensation coupled with excellent service!
We had the rijsttafel supreme. The food came out very quickly and the description of each dish, by the waiter, was very helpful. There was plenty of food to feed the army of people we took with us. A very pleasant experience was had by all.

Review 9th September 2011 – Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, we turned up later in the evening without a booking, they acknowledge they were pretty full, only 1 person front of house and that service may be slower, didn’t matter at all..our banquet meal was fantastic!!! The waiter was extremely friendly and funny, very helpful with menu options and explained our dishes as he brought them out, would recommend to anyone – give it a go, we will be going back – several times i think..

Review 17th June 2011 – My wife and stumbled on this restaurant because it was programmed into the speed dial of our hotel telephone. I checked it out on Tripadvisor and I couldn’t believe my eyes.
We were greeted by a warm and smiling face and told about the Indonesian dining experience that is Rijsttafel (rice table). All was explained and in no time at all, we were immersed in exotic foods and the aromas and the textures, that are an essential part of Indonesian dining culture.
The accolades are true and there is not much that hasn’t been said. It was a truly unique dining experience and it is one that you should not miss.
Our Rijsttafel was around twenty small ‘experiences’, plus condiments, plus rice that are delivered in small dishes and kept warm on the table in special heaters. You sample at your leisure the wonderful array of foods that you have in front of you.
Make sure that you allow plenty of time for this pleasure filled experience and make sure that you are hungry.
Thank you Joss and Kees, the next time we are in Napier will be the next time we will visit your establishment. Your restaurant is a diamond and we can see why it has been going since 1983.

Review 7th June 2011 – A friend and I walked past around 4pm and it smelled so good that we agreed to go there for dinner. It turned out to be an absolutely fabulous dining experience. The people who worked there were very friendly and helpful, the decor was interesting and unique. My partner nor I had tried indonesian food before. We ordered the vegetarian meal to split. It came with SO many little dishes, each with a different and delicious flavor all its own. There was so much food, that we couldn’t finish it all. Not by a long shot. I believe this big meal is 30$ per person. It is a good deal, considering you get to try over 10 little dishes. This would be a great place to go if you get the “munchies” if you know what I mean. Excellent food, great atmosphere, service with a smile. I will definitely go there again.

Review  6th june 2011 – What a find! We just happened to stumble across this place, and I’m so glad we did. You have to get the Rijstafel – a tasting menu like no other! You have about 20 different small dishes brought to your table to feast on. Such a great meal.

Review 1st June 2011 – Fantastic location and service. The variety of dishes in the rijstafel was very impressive. Great all round dining experience – we love it. Only minus was that for me food could have been a bit spicier.

Review 29th March 2011 – This was amazing!!! Beautiful food, very reasonable and extremely friendly staff…..Just wish I lived in Napier so I could go every week :( The atmosphere was also really great. I loved the taste menu, you get to taste so much….and it was all good. They also sell condiments which I bought 1 of each….so will try to recreate at home!

Review 26th February 2011 – Going to this lovely restaurant is like going to a friends’ home to eat a wonderful dinner that is made by caring people that make you feel welcome. The rijsttafel is an experience in both taste and social enjoyment. Lots of different small tastes of delightful flavours. Eating and chatting while gazing at the beautiful views of the ocean makes your dinner experience one to talk about long after you’ve been there. Thanks Jos and Kees for taking good care of us and our friends!

Review 21st Janaury 2011: We had a wonderful meal on Friday 21st. It was a very rare horrible day outside in Napier but we received a very warm welcome from the owner who delivered great service throughout the evening. Our main was the Rijsttafel Supreme. It was an outstanding mix of flavours and textures and there was more than enough in terms of quantity. We had never tried Indonesian cuisine and found it quite simply stunning! We were advised not to have an entree with the Rijsttafel due to the quantity and this proved good advice as there was plenty for the two of us. We did stretch our selves to a desert which was also lovely tasting. (The Waffle and the Pisang Goreng). Because it was our anniversary we topped it all off with an Indonesian Coffee and Spekkoek Cake (just a delight). The atmosphere was cosy and un-rushed making the evening a delight all round. Value for money I doubt this can be touched. I found the prices surprisingly low when compared to other restaurant prices we know of in Napier and across New Zealand. I would venture to say it must be one of the best value for quality restaurants in New Zealand. Tony and Miralie loved this little gem and recommend it to those who enjoy quality food and service at great value.

Review 23rd November 2010: This place gets 5 stars from me only because I can’t give it 6. Words like “awesome” just don’t do it. The rjstaffell is indescribably good, the atmosphere is fine, and the staff helpful, friendly and polite.
I will so be back!

Review 17th November 2010: We had a super dinning experience for 8 of us choosing the Meat and Fish Risttafel- ummm not sure of my spelling. Fabulous array of dishes, each with different texture, flavour, everything was fresh and full of flavour, I just kept on eating and eating. Totally recommend this delightful little restaurant.

Review 20th October 2010: A great way to introduce your taste buds to Indonesian food, especially the banquet meal, more food than I could eat…and that’s saying something. whats more it’s at an excellent price. Also the service was excellent and they made my family and myself very welcome.

Review 18th October 2010: The menu promises much & certainly delivers. A wide selection of Indonesian cuisine from the traditional Rijsttafel of delicious dishes served on candle warmers at your table, or choose from an extensive menu of soups, entrees, stays, mains & desserts. Fully licensed & most reasonably priced. Run by two hospitable Dutch fellows ( Kees Peters & Joss Lamers)
who are no strangers to the food & hospitality scene. This restaurant is great dining for intimate twosomes, families or groups.
